When I told my school careers advisor that I wanted to work with computers, she told me that I should become a secretary.
To be fair to her, the kind of work that I do now hadn’t been invented then. The internet didn’t exist and many of the tech related jobs that seem normal now had only appeared in science fiction.
When a child is thinking about their career choices, how can they imagine what skills might be in demand when they are graduating? And how do we break down the stereotypes about who is best suited for a career in tech, when really there’s a niche for everyone.
That’s why I’ve been happy to work with Reed Technology on their #TechSheCan initiative, helping to show girls that it is possible for women to have a career in tech. You can see my piece here.
