While I wouldn’t describe myself as an eco-warrior, but more as a concerned citizen of the world, I want to leave things in a better state than when I found them. It’s a view that’s shaped my career, and made me look at the way we use our global resources.
So, I was pleased to take on the role of Executive Sponsor for the Trust’s Sustainability Programme. It’s a pleasure to work with people who are committed to improving the Trust’s footprint on the Earth, and surprising how easy it has been to make positive changes in both big and small ways.
In the last 12 months, we’ve;
- Installed more energy efficient boilers
- Fitted thermostatic controls to the heating
- Got a grant to replace our inefficient lightbulbs with more energy efficient versions
- Started to remove single use plastic across our estate, and
- Taken part in individual environmental challenges as part of a ‘Dare to Care’ initiative.
My personal pledge is to reduce the amount of paper that the Trust uses. Currently we average 1,000,000 sheets of paper printed per month – that’s equivalent to 63 trees a month! (As calculated on this handy reckoner) We can do better than this.
